LED Star Lamp

Tell us the story of your project: 

It all started when I switched my elective from psychology to Intro to Engineering Design with Ms. Berbawy. In this class, we were required to come up with and create a project to showcase in May at Maker Faire Bay Area. After spending countless minutes scouring different websites and magazines, I finally stumbled upon a pinterest post that led me to Etsy. This user on etsy was selling LED lamps in the shape of a box with carvings on the outside which let the light out. I decided to recreate this as my project. Throughout this process, i attempted to recreate a piece of technology from a couple of pictures with no instructions at all. I have no technical or mechanical experience. In the end, my project came out to be an LED Lamp in the shape of a box. I laser cut the sides out of acrylic and put a light inside the box to make it light up.

How-to: 

I first created a plan of the outline of my box which was initially 6 x 6 x 6 inches in Adobe Illustrator. I then made it in Autodesk Inventor to see if all the pieces would fit together. However. I didn't account for the excess lengths when the box would be attached together so I changed the dimensions to 6.25 x 6.25 x 6 inches. After I confirmed my dimensions, which were 5.25 x 5.25 x 5 inches, I used a website to create fingers and put the plans onto Adobe Illustrator. Afterwards, I laser cut my plans and used acrylic cement to glue all the pieces except the top together. Finally, I put my battery powered light inside.

Aha! moment: 
The biggest insight I had during my build was when I discovered what fingers were. Apparently fingers are need on the edged of sides when they are going to be put together into a 3D figure. This is to make the element stick better together.
Uh-oh! moment: 
I finished laser cutting my entire box and adhered all the sides to each other. However, the plan to use the lightbulb changed so I had to recut and reattach my entire box because one of the sides had the wrong design on it. I basically had to restart my entire project when it was already months after the deadline.
